The President’s corner

I want to take a moment to send you my most sincere wish for a very restful and peaceful holiday.
May this very special and beautiful season of hope bring together all who weave the themes of technology and gerontology for the benefit of the world’s aging citizens. Together we are having an impact that is being felt worldwide.

I recently returned from a great trip to Korea to take part in the International Gerontechnology Expo & Forum 2017 held at the Korea International Exhibition and Convention Center (www.kintex.com), on November 9-11 2017. The event constituted the preamble to the formal establishment of a Korean Chapter of the International Society for Gerontechnology.

Asia’s unique demographic challenges are driving an intense interest in Gerontechnology, as the prospect of insufficient numbers of care workers for its elderly populations looms ever larger. We welcome the foresight of the Korean people in looking to emerging Gerontechnologies as a solution to this growing challenge.

International Gerontechnology Expo & Forum 2017 Korea

Professor Woo-Joung Shim of the Department of Senior Business Management of Hanyang Cyber University and Director of Research at Firstcare, Co., Ltd is the President of the Korean Association of Products and Services for Senior Citizens, a regional leader in the creation of advanced Gerontechnologies for older adults. Professor Shim’s very successful International Gerontechnology Expo & Forum 2017 was held at the Korea International Exhibition and Convention Center, in the Republic of Korea on November 9-11 2017.

II Brazilian Congress of Gerontechnology, Sao Paolo Brazil

The Brazilian Gerontechnology Society was successfully launched by professor Carla da Silva Santana Castro as president during the congress from 16th till 18th November 2017.

With conferences and lectures providing new insights on the challenges and opportunities for Gerontechnology in Brazil, research in graduate level in this subject, the development of products and equipment, robotics, digital technology, information and communication, among other topics.
The excellent program also included several pre-conference short courses, conversation circles and cultural presentation.

An ISG master class “Design for Ageing for students” was organized and Emeritus professor Annelies van Bronswijk presented her lecture “How to research or design for Gerontechnology” as the one Grandmaster of Gerontechnology. In addition, professor dr. Johannes Doll, vice president of the Brazilian Gerontechnology society gave a lecture on Research and innovation for a sustainable humanity while professor Helianthe Kort presented a lecture on Creating Healthy Environments.

Both professor Doll and professor Kort were also invited as a key-note speaker at the conference.

Marina Soares Bernardes MSc. won the Herman Bouma prize for best poster in Gerontechnology research and design.

First Gerontechnology Symposium 2017, Monash University Malaysia

The Gerontechnology Symposium held at the Monash University in Malaysia was a great succes! The symposium attracted great attention in Malaysia, which is a relatively young country. Around 200 people participated in this one-day symposium, including academics/researchers, industry practitioners, government and NGOs from the Asian region (Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong).

Professor Yeh-Liang Hsu, Editor-in-Chief of Gerontechnology and IT Director of the International Society for Gerontechnology was invited to give a speech to introduce gerontechnology, its opportunities and challenges. The Gerontechnology Lab of Monash University, chaired by Professor Pei Lee, TEH, the organizer of this symposium, also showcased their research projects in gerontechnology. Researchers in Malaysia also expressed strong interest to the possibility of establishing an ISG Malaysian Chapter.

Annual Japan Chapter conference held at Hiroshima, Tokyo, on december
2nd, 2017

This was the 17th time that we had our Chapter Conference in Hiroshima, since we started in 2001.
We had 2 keynote lectures and 8 presentations. The number of participants was 14, less than regular years in Tokyo, but discussions were very active and fruitful!

Entire proceedings can be find on this link.

Though papers were in Japanese, titles and abstracts were written in English.
And, of course, we have promoted to participate at the ISG 2018 conference next year.
